The Mindfulness Practice

Picture

Mindfulness
is an essential part of my life. As someone who tends to ruminate, my thoughts can easily get caught in a continuous loop of over- processing. To counteract this, I apply mindfulness as a daily practice—one that helps me stay present and show up as a more authentic version of myself.
Mindfulness, in my lens means:
  • Having a non-judgmental attitude with oneself and others.
  • Slowing down, being in the body versus being in the mind.
  • Does not have to be in the form of sitting meditation. You can apply it anywhere-walking, eating, washing dishes, cleaning, etc.
  • Having child-like curiosity and openness to allow new information to flow.
  • Self-awareness for one's own thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
  • Providing a space for gratitude as a tool to "flip the script" when we are feeling dysregulated.

Where I can enhance my mindfulness:
  • When I feel overwhelmed by life's obligations and responsibilities–taking a moment to breathe and slow down.
  • Applying mindfulness even when the environment is feeling chaotic.
  • Continue my journey with mindful eating–appreciating how my food got to my plate, enjoying the flavors and textures, and thank myself for nourishing my body.
  • Being present when connecting with others. Mindfully listening and soaking in the moment.

Where does Mindfulness
apply to coaching?

REFLECTION
What I’ve learned through my coaching experience is just how vital mindfulness is within a session. I now incorporate a 5–10 minute mindfulness practice before meeting with clients. Taking that time to breathe, release the day, and set an intention helps me arrive fully present and grounded. It’s important that I don’t enter a session feeling anxious or tense because energy is contagious. I’ve noticed that when I bring a calm, centered presence, my clients often reflect that energy back.

Sometimes clients arrive straight from work or another obligation, feeling rushed or frazzled. Life happens! It’s essential for me, as a coach, to attune to their energy and meet them where they are with full acceptance. When I sense a client is in that state, I gently invite them to take a mindful moment with me. Simply pausing for a moment to breath and be present together often shifts the tone of the session, creating a more connected and intentional space for growth.

By practicing mindfulness during a live session, clients may feel inspired to incorporate small, mindful moments into their own daily routines. Coaches can lead by example by consistently integrating mindfulness into their own lives, demonstrating its value through their presence and energy. When clients witness mindfulness in action, it transforms a mere concept into a practical and empowering tool for everyday life.
