26/4/2025 The Path to Self-Transcendence Self-Transcendence plays a major role in Spiritual Life Coaching. As we discover our authentic selves, we begin to expand our understanding of who we are and what we’re connected to. In conventional society, we’re often not taught to follow our intuition. Instead, we follow societal norms designed to help us fit in. This can lead us to ignore the subtle "pull" that guides us toward our true purpose. As a high school teacher, I was introduced to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to better support my students. However, I wasn’t aware of his revised model, which places Self-Transcendence at the top. Our focus was always on helping students develop self-awareness so they could eventually reach self-actualization — the original pinnacle of Maslow’s pyramid. Self-actualization is about reaching your full potential by aligning your true self with your core values and natural gifts. However, one cannot reach this stage without first cultivating self-awareness and consistently taking action. Understanding our strengths, motivations, and tendencies is crucial for growth into self-actualization. Self-transcendence, on the other hand, goes beyond the self. To connect with the world around us, we must first connect with ourselves. We go inward in order to move outward. As I’ve studied self-transcendence, I’ve realized that our world needs this more than ever. As we become more digitally connected like never before, we veer away from true human connection and vulnerability. We are creatures born of the natural world, yet we often forget this — until we step outside of the digital noise and reconnect with the world around us. REFLECTION I’ve come to see that my classroom provides a space where students can tap into self-transcendence. I teach Food Services, a higher-level class where students move beyond basic life skills like cooking, cleaning, and organization. They also develop teamwork, time-management, independence, and problem-solving skills. But what’s more powerful is how they expand their sense of self and become part of something greater — a community. In the classroom, they’re immersed in a space where they work together to serve their peers and teachers. We face challenges and celebrate successes together. It’s truly inspiring to witness these young adults grow as they harness their strengths and come together as one united tribe. Part of why my classroom has become such an essential space for personal growth and community is my background in life coaching. Developing my coaching skills and learning about concepts like self-transcendence has naturally integrated into my teaching. For this, I am deeply grateful. Many people think of self-transcendence as a destination, but the truth is, it’s always within us — we just need to remember how to find it. Inner peace and outer connection are available to us at any moment, but it’s a daily practice to stay committed to it, especially in a world that constantly pulls us away. As a teacher and life coach, my mission is not only to work toward my own self-transcendence but also to help others reach it. Through mindfulness practices, reflection, visualization, and positive psychology, I empower individuals to elevate their transformation and enhance their overall life satisfaction.
