Initial assessments offer valuable insight into the client’s life and help identify areas they may wish to explore. Assessments are also effective when used at key checkpoints along the coaching journey, allowing both client and coach to monitor progress over time. As the coaching relationship comes to a close, assessments can be used to help measure the client’s growth since the beginning of their journey. Taking time to pause and reflect on this progress is a significant part of recognizing personal development and celebrating success. Assessments are important because they organize and track positive change, promote self-awareness, and ensure that the client’s goals remains aligned with their evolving values and visions. Throughout the process, assessments should be used in a positive and empowering way, highlighting the client’s strengths and values, which can serve as powerful tools for navigating future challenges. REFLECTION As a coach, I’ve found assessments to be powerful and positive tools—for both the client and myself. I’ve explored a wide variety of assessments that measure energy levels, life satisfaction, mental and emotional fitness, physical health, nutrition, readiness for change, and confidence levels. One simple yet effective method I often use is the 1–10 scale to assess a client’s readiness for change or level of confidence. I typically introduce this scale at the end of a session to help the client reflect on where they are. I’ll then ask what made them choose that number, which often opens up a meaningful space for self-reflection and deeper insight. In addition to scales, I especially love using the Wheel of Life assessment as an initial tool. Clients can print it out and color in their chart or complete it digitally. The visual impact of the colored pie chart brings immediate awareness to which areas of life feel satisfying and which are out of balance—creating natural opportunities for goal-setting. Many clients are surprised by their results, as they rarely take the time to reflect so holistically on their life satisfaction. This tool has also found a place in my classroom. I’ve adapted the Wheel of Life (changed to Wheel of Growth for students) to focus on qualities specific to culinary students: teamwork, focus, knife skills, work ethic, organization, and recipe comprehension. The chart has helped my students build self-awareness and set meaningful goals for themselves in class. Ultimately, assessments offer a bridge between reflection and action, helping individuals gain clarity, direction, and motivation for personal growth, whether in coaching or the classroom. Through my coaching experiences, I’ve witnessed my clients' unique qualities emerge, which continues to inspire me to explore and incorporate a wider variety of assessments. Just as I learned in my teaching career, one size does not fit all. My goal is to continue building a diverse repertoire of assessment tools to better support each client’s individual learning style, preferences, and needs.
